On December 3, China's Ministry of Industry unveiled a five-year plan aimed at greener development of its industrial sectors, promising to reduce carbon and pollutant emissions and help emerging industries meet peak carbon commitments by 2030, Reuters reported.
The world's largest producer of greenhouse gases aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has confirmed targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 18% and energy intensity by 13.5% by 2025, in line with a plan covering the period from 2021 to 2025.
The ministry also said it would strictly control capacity in the steel, cement, aluminum and other sectors.
MIIT said it will increase clean energy consumption and encourage the use of hydrogen energy, biofuels and waste fuels in steel, cement, chemical and other industries.
The plan also aims to promote the "rational" exploitation of mineral resources such as iron ore and non-ferrous metals, and to develop the use of secondary sources, the ministry said.
